DBS Student Events
One of the most attractive features of DBS as a place to study is its location in Dublin city centre. Surrounded by the best of pubs, café bars and clubs you can be sure of easy access to the biggest social nights in the city. Along with all that’s happening in the city centre, the DBS Student Services department organises exclusive nights throughout the year for the students of the College.
At the beginning of every year Student Services organises a week of events to welcome new and returning Students. This week began this year with the Clubs and Societies Sign-up day where students joining the many Societies and Sports teams DBS has to offer, this was then followed by a comedy show in 'The Lower Deck' bar where a huge Student crowd were entertained by four of 'The Laughter lounges' best comedians! The second day saw a huge group descend on the Iveagh grounds, Crumlin, for the first ever Fresher’s week 'Sports day! Over 100 Students participated in a 5-a-side soccer blitz with the winners and runners-up taking home cash prizes, and even more valuable bragging rights, while spectators were entertained by a whole host of inflatables, such as a 'gladiator joust', obstacle course, and 'bungee run'. These exhausted students were then brought to meet the rest of the Students in Diceys garden for a barbeque in the sunshine. The week concluded with the highlight of the week, the Fresher’s Ball which was held in 'Break for the border'. Anybody who was lucky enough to get one of the 750 tickets before they sold out was treated to an extraordinary night that was talked about for weeks afterwards!
At this time of year the Students have settled into their studies and are ready to get dressed up and dance the night away at the Halloween Ball. This year Students pulled out all the stops to dress up and the atmosphere in the cobweb filled 'NV' nightclub was second to none!
After the Graduation ceremonies we invite all graduates to join us for a drinks reception to say goodbye to DBS and mingle with their fellow graduates. The reception this year took place in 'Kobra' bar & 'Bia Bar' on the 12th & 13th of November. Everybody was in high spirits seeing their classmates again and sharing their new experiences outside DBS.
Wacky Tacky Comedy Show
Organised by our very own event management Students, the Wacky Tacky comedy show was a barrel of laughs, and all for a good cause too, the 'Laura Lynn Foundation'. The Event Took Place in the Laughter Lounge on 19th November. Tickets sold out and the Students raised over €4,000 for the charity which I'm sure was greatly appreciated by the children who benefited from it. Well done everybody!
The Christmas Ball is the last chance for Students to mingle with each other before the Christmas holidays! The Christmas Ball is generally one of the largest attended events in the year, where some Students dress up as elves, Santa’s helpers, and of course the main man, Santa Clause! This year’s Christmas Ball is organised by another group of event management students, to be held in 'XXI' nightclub, and promises to be another spectacular success with profits being donated to a worthy cause!
Chinese New Year
Also known as the lunar New Year, This year our Chinese Students will celebrate the year of the Tiger. The day will include subsidised food in the canteen with a live internet projection of the festivities on a big screen!
This year a number Students competed to be crowned Miss DBS, with last year’s winner Miss Rachelle McCahey relinquishing her crown for a seat on the judges panel. This year winner, Miss Felicia Torica will represent DBS in the Miss University Final next year; we wish her all the best in the competition!!
The Ski Trip
Back by popular demand! Last year the Ski Trip saw 16 Students jetting off to Morzine, France for a week of Skiing and other fun activities. The trip was the topic of conversation for weeks after their return and left those that didn't go green with envy! This year should see the same number jetting off to Zell am See, Austria, and should prove to be a successful as it has been consistently over the past number of years!
The Annual Ball
Possibly the most important event of the year, The Annual Formal Ball gives Students and Staff the chance to put on their finest formal attire and enjoy a four course meal, live entertainment, and Dj until the early hours of the morning. Tickets are highly sought after and those who get them are rarely disappointed! Last year the Ball was held in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, where Students were treated to a delicious 4 course meal only to dance the night away afterwards!
The Law Ball
In early March the Law Society organised the first Law Ball, in Kobra Bar, Leeson St. The night started with a Champagne reception and continued with some fun activities including the wacky, 'Camel Racing'. The Students then danced the night away and looked back on the event year they have had.
As it gets later in the year all eyes are on the coming summer exams, however RAG week is just early enough for the Students to have one last week of fun before they get stuck into the books! Similar to Fresher’s week RAG week is another week of events for students to enjoy before the end of year exams and summer holidays. Last year saw some wild events such as the Gumball Rally (where Students race to complete wacky tasks around Dublin city), followed by pub games and live DJ. The week was finished off with a Mardi Gras themed RAG Ball, which was organised this year by the 2nd Year Marketing & Event Management Students!
