Jonathan Gildea is a graduate of the Higher Diploma in Science in Computing (Web and Cloud Technologies) at DBS. He now works in Amazon, and returned to DBS with Amazon for our recent Careers Fair.
How has the course benefited you?
The course was brilliant in preparing me for a career in IT. As I had never worked in the industry, coming from a construction background, I wasn't sure what to expect. It was really busy and fast paced but that is IT in general, so you need to keep up with the latest trends and know what companies are looking for. I gained a huge knowledge across many different sectors in IT from Databases, Operating Systems, Networking, Linux, Programming, Web Applications including front-end & back-end, to learning about Cloud Computing and the different models like SaaS, PaaS & IaaS. The course gave me a fantastic footing for starting as a Graduate Cloud Support Associate in Amazon Web Services where I was able to develop the skills I had learned on the course.
How have you enjoyed the course?
I have enjoyed the course immensely. The quality of the lecturers and content was brilliant. Also, the lecturers are very easy going and approachable so it made learning a lot easier and they were happy for us to ask questions at any stage, even by email at weekends. That and the fact that the age group of the students was similar, so everyone got on great together and we all really enjoyed it.
What do you feel was the best thing about studying in DBS?
As mentioned, I think the content and time frame of the course were the best.
Also, to be able to sit Microsoft exams for free is a great bonus and looks fantastic on your CV. Numerous interviewers asked me about those exams and noted how good they are to have. Aside from the course, DBS is in a great location in the heart of the city with lots of great restaurants, cafes, bars and shops around so you are never stuck for a place to go.
