Sports News 2009/2010: Cricket Another amazing year for the DBS Cricket Squad! Returning this year as current All Ireland champions after their sensational victory over University of Ulster, the cricket team have wasted no time in getting back to winning ways. In their first competition, The Irish Universities indoor Intervarsity’s, the DBS students reached the final after victories over DIT, Trinity, DCU and Griffith College to name but a few. Unfortunately the guys were narrowly defeated by the hosts NUIG in the final after some marvellous performances along the way. The DBS team were the only team to go through all their league games without defeat and subsequently received 5 nominations for player of the tournament. The cricket team now face the prospect of retaining their All Ireland title in the summer, however with performances like that in Galway our boys will not be far away again. Good luck DBS cricket team.
Rugby After just two years of playing in College Rugby the DBS rugby team were promoted into division 2 this year and faced the daunting task of much tougher competition. The DBS students got off to the dream start with victory over group favourites Carlow in a close game that ended up 15 – 10. The rugby team went on to strengthen their position in the table with victory over Griffith College. With bad weather around Christmas, training and matches were affected and the momentum of the team was certainly affected. This was evident when the team were defeated by CSN 12 – 20. With three remaining games left in the league DBS are still in with a chance of being crowned league champions, however the team needs to gather momentum quickly and get back to winning ways. This year the DBS Rugby team once again renewed their annual friendly match with ISEG Lille, France. The French students travelled to Ireland in January in the hope of revenge after the DBS Rugby team had a comfortable victory last year in France. However, hopes of any French revenge were quickly forgotten about when the DBS team ran out comfortable winners 53 – 3. Next year the rugby team will once again travel to France hoping for their third consecutive victory over their French counterpart.
Soccer DBS has a great history of excellent Soccer teams and this year was no exception. This team of new recruits showed great promise early in the year under new management. Unfortunately due to a combination of players being unfamiliar with each other, and a disproportionate amount of injuries during the first 3 matches leaving the squad short of key players, disadvantaged the team greatly. The soccer team managed to pick themselves up after disappointment in the league and reached the quarter final of the CFAI Cup. The soccer boys went down to a very well drilled Cork team, who went on to win the cup. The team are already looking forward to next year as the majority of the team are in their first year.
Basketball The DBS Men’s Basketball team have brought home some well deserved silverware this year after a season of hard work under the instruction of Irish coach, Dave Baker. DBS were unbeaten throughout their league campaign, only to defeat NCI for the 3rd time in the final at the National Basketball arena. The final score line was 81-60 to the DBS students. This victory in the league is a massive achievement and has established DBS as a college dedicated to basketball. Due to their excellent performances, the governing body of basketball, Basketball Ireland, has for the first time in its history permitted a division 3 team to compete in this year’s Intervarsities in Galway. We would like to wish the team all the very best of luck in this competition and let’s hope they can add to their trophy collection this year.
The DBS Ladies basketball team have like their counterparts had a very good year. Victories over Crumlin College, Senior College Dun Laoghaire, and Griffith College saw the team climb to the top of their league. The ladies team suffered just one defeat in the league, which unfortunately saw them narrowly miss out in a spot at the finals. Here’s hoping that next year the ladies team can go all the way. Pool
This was the first year that DBS competed in the CUSAI Pool league. The team currently sit on top of their division with victories over UCD, DIT and NCI. If winning ways continue the team will qualify for the All Ireland finals which will be a remarkable achievement for the team who competed for the first time this year.
GAA This was officially the first year that DBS formed a Gaelic football team. The gaelic squad have trained long and hard all year and have played a number of friendly matches against colleges. The most memorable victory of the year was over DIT, a college with a strong tradition of gaelic football. The team hopes to pick up some silverware at a number of Gaelic blitzes in the summer. Surely the DBS Gaelic team will grow in strength next year which will allow them to compete in leagues and championships.
Golf Another landmark achievement for DBS this year was competing in the Irish College Golf League. The golf team have fulfilled all their games in the league and find themselves mid table. The team are already looking forward to next year and are committed to establishing a strong golfing reputation in Dublin Business School. Playing out of the beautiful Powerscourt Golf club, representing the DBS golf team is a real treat for any golf enthusiast. DBS Societies A key area the Student Services department focuses on is that of facilitating new and existing Societies. Societies are groups of students that have a common interest. Examples of popular societies within the college are the Surf Society, Psychology Society, the Film & Media Society, Drama Society and the Poker Society.
Joining a society is a great way of meeting new people with similar interests, each November the Surf Society holds the Annual Surf Trip, open to anybody who wants to go, and last year the Psychology Society fundraised and secured funding for their trip to Vienna to see Sigmund Freud’s house. Societies change every year, with old ones getting replaced by new ones. It’s very easy to set up a society, for guidance regarding setting up a society talk to the Students Services department. It is generally accepted that if more than 30 people are interested in the Society the college will recognise it as an official DBS Society. Societies are usually set up at the start of the year in September/October before the sign-up day occurs during Freshers week, however some Societies start slightly later than that as new students realise they have common interests with others.
A list of Societies available to students in 2009/2010 were:
* The Surf Society
* The Psychology Society
* The Law Society
* The Cinematic Society
* The Drama Society
* The Poker Society
* Psychology Study Society

The Surf Society This year’s Surf society organised a number of unforgettable trips, perhaps most memorable was the trip to Dunfanaghy, in County Donegal. Over 50 students travelled to the northern county for a trip they surely wouldn’t forget. The waves were big and the weather was ideal, making perfect surfing conditions. For those who did not fancy surfing, there was plenty of craic to be found in the local bars and nightclubs. Every student received a complementary hoody on the trip as a memory of the trip.
The surf society continues to grow in popularity and has now established itself as a must for all DBS students. If you would like to get involved in this fun packed society then don’t forget to get sign up at the start of term. Congratulations to the Surf Society committee for organising yet another year of fantastic events. Cinematic Society Transformed from the film society, the cinematic society this year organised a number of enjoyable events for all students interested. Arguably the most notable event of the year was the ‘Fright Fest’ competition which saw society members record a short film on a topic of their choice. The response was tremendous from the society members and the winners received some great prizes for their efforts.
Other highlights of the year were the society’s regular screenings in Bia Bar with complimentary popcorn, themed table quiz’s, frequent cinema trips with discounts for DBS students and regular nights out for all society members. The committee members are already making plans for next year, so students should get ready for another blockbuster year. Dance Society The dance society this year saw record numbers in participation. The society is certainly one of the most enjoyable on campus and keeps students fit and healthy with weekly classes in Hip Hop and salsa dancing. Dance classes are open to all students at the price of €2 and are delivered by professional instructors who have years of experience. The main aim of the dance society is to teach students the joy of dancing whilst encouraging friendship and having fun. The dance society performed at a number of key events during the year. Perhaps the most impressive was their performances at the drama society fundraiser ‘Ice Blast’ and their routine at the annual DBS fashion show. Congratulations to the DBS dance society committee on another remarkable year. Poker Society Introduced this year as a result of the recent poker phenomenon, the poker society in its first year proved to be a complete success. The committee organised poker events every two weeks which saw large number attend. The poker society would like to thank their host and sponsor Kiely’s of Donnybrook for all their help and support throughout the year. The committee has made plans next year to merge with other colleges and hold an intervarsity poker event, which would be the first of its kind in Dublin. For your chance to be involved in another fantastic year that’s on the cards for the DBS poker society, don’t forget to sign up at fresher’s day. Psychology Study Society Psychology Study Society (otherwise known as PSS) is DBS’s latest society. PSS was setup to guide and support students enrolled on psychology courses. We all know that college life can be stressful at times and simply having a chat with someone who is experiencing the same issues can make college life much easier. This is exactly what PSS aims to provide psychology students with. PSS has organised cramming sessions before exams and workshops on study skills this year. The PSS committee strongly encourage all potential members to sign up at the start of the year at sign up day to get the most from the society. Muslim Society The Muslim society is central to the experience of Muslim students in DBS. The society meets once a week for Friday prayer time and enjoys light refreshments afterwards were discussion takes place. Other noteworthy events of the year involved presentations by speakers on a variety of topics. The Muslim society has plans next year to secure a permanent room for prayer. Nonetheless, next year will surely prove to be a success for the Muslim society as they continue to grow and grow. Everyone is welcome to join the society, so if the LGBT sounds like your kind of thing then don’t forget to sign up during fresher’s week. Law Society The Law society has had yet another successful year.Having organised a number of social events during the year the Law society also arranged many fun and practical debates for members and non members to participate in. The law society is extremely popular with our law students, however many other students find this society extremely enjoyable and fun. One of the highlights of the year was the regular presentations from invited guests which saw large crowds attend. The law society was also represented in the Irish Times University debate. The committee have already began to make plans for a law ball next year, which will surely be a memorable event. Drama Society The DBS Drama Society is open to all students and not just those who have a passion for acting. The Drama society organises weekly drama workshops based on programmes such as ‘Mock the Week’. DBS Drama has organised several memorable nights out this year. The popular ‘Ice Blast’ saw student bands and the DBS dance crew perform to a large audience. This was truly ‘one event, two venues, one amazing night’. Another highlight of the year was the ‘Hen and Stag Party’ in one of Dublin’s top nightclubs. The very morning after two of our very own DBS students woke up with more than just a hangover, as they prepared for a wedding in the DBS reception area. The wedding didn’t go quite to plan as the audience discovered. Another remarkable achievement was the first annual DBS Arts Festival. Events on the week included ‘Cloud 9’, workshops, monologues, lessons in sushi and origami making provided by the Anime society and not to forget the rap party to cap the week off. The Arts Festival proved extremely successful and was a tremendous success for the Drama committee.
This has truly been a remarkable year for the DBS Drama society, however with plans for script writing workshops as well as presentation skills next year the society promises to be even more DRAMATIC. If you would like to find out more about DBS drama please get in touch via email at Dbsdrama@gmail.com and don’t forget to sign up during fresher’s week.
Anime & Manga Society Establishing itself as one of DBS’s longest standing societies, the Anime Society has once again been very productive. The Anime society aims to entertain students through the medium of Japanese animated films in a relaxed atmosphere. The society also encourages the reading of manga and development of artistic skills in the styles employed by manga. By holding regular screenings and providing lessons in sushi and origami making the Anime society has certainly had a very prolific year. Current members are already looking forward to what next year holds for this unique and enjoyable society. Christian Union Society The Christian Union Society (otherwise known as CU) has been created to provide a place for students to follow the word of God and his teachings. CU is a society that opens its arms to everyone through their regular events. CU holds weekly meetings in DBS were members follow the teachings from the Bible and then discuss in small groups a point from a passage. These Small groups allow members to talk more openly, and are a fantastic way to explore the Bible. It is important to remember that anyone can become a member of CU. The CU inspires to reflect God’s love on campus therefore it is obliged to include all members of the DBS community into its vision. If CU sounds like a society you would like to be a part of please remember to sign up during Fresher’s week.
