What is Film & Media?

The BA in Film & Media programme offers learners the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of the various forms of media culture that now exist. Whether cinema, television, radio, print media, advertising or the proliferation of new media practices on the internet, your three years of study will give you the chance to examine the way the contemporary electronic audiovisual media represent society and shape our understanding of the world around us. Another important element of this programme is its practical and vocational component: learners will learn the basic skills involved in digital film productions and will carry out their own media projects.

Aims and Objectives

The BA in Film & Media consists of a range of interrelated modules designed to address the historical, theoretical and practical aspects of media culture. Learners are exposed to a range of research methods that include textual analysis, the study of audiovisual media in the context of their historical evolution, the investigation of the operation of contemporary mass media, both globally and in Ireland, and the practical aspects of media production. Learners will also be able to consider the ways in which mass media represent social and individual identity, the issues relating to ethnicity, race, gender, and the globalisation of culture.

Programme Structure

This is a 3 year programme. The degree is divided into three levels and students take the programme in its entirety.
