Overview

This introductory programme has been developed to help learners begin to develop the skills and attributes employers in the financial services industry require from FinTech graduates. The focus has been refined to develop learning outcomes that focus on the skills gap identified by prospective employers in the evolving financial services industry.

Programme Aims and Objectives

 

Aims
Provide learners with the ability to critically assess the ongoing implementation of FinTech in the financial services industry, through exploring how FinTech can be used to find solutions to complex real-world problems. The programme will specifically focus upon the digitisation of financial services, and the evolution of innovative technologies.

Objectives

  • Introduce learners to the core financial decision-making concepts.

  • Provide learners with an understanding of the inter-related nature of financials markets and services in a Fintech context.

  • Allow learners to develop a holistic overview of the diverse Irish (EU) Fintech ecosystem.

  • Expose learners to the accelerating digitisation of financial services.

  • Introduce learner to the core concepts and enterprise application of Blockchain technologies.

  • Develop the learners' awareness of the broadening intersection of financial services and technology.

 

Assessment

To successfully complete the programme the learners will be assessed through a mixture of formative, summative assessments.

The overall grade will be weighted as follows:

Scenario-based assignment (group) = 50%
Final examination = 50%

 Please note this programme is not on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).

Course Content

The programme focuses on understanding concepts and frameworks by discussing how they impact in a practical setting. A flipped classroom approach is adopted, whereby learners will engage with content, which discusses the theoretical aspects of the topic, and knowledge checks prior to class. Classroom time will be used for discussing the understanding of the concepts and frameworks through real world examples, often using case studies.

  • Marketplace Fundamentals

  • The FinTech Ecosystem and Open Banking

  • The Digital Transformation of Financial Services

  • The Future of Money

  • Financial Services in a FinTech Environment

  • Blockchain & Tokenisation

  • Financial Services Regulation and RegTech

Structure

The key subject areas are delivered over 12 weeks with continuous assessment completed during the course. Each week will consist of a number of different activities which incorporate classroom, live discussion forums and Moodle resources. The blended learning approach, and utilisation of a variety of modes of delivery, creates an environment of constant formative assessment and feedback.

The teacher/learner ratio allows for ongoing formative feedback to be given to learners in a face-to-face classroom environment and/or live on-line sessions, and tutorials, workshops, events, quizzes, breakfast briefings, practical exercises and debates all provide opportunities for the teacher to engage directly with learners. Formative assessment will also be delivered via in class exercises, and feedback provided through the review of components of the assessment strategy.

This course is delivered online.

Student Profile

This course will appeal to students from both a business and financial services sector. It will also appeal to professionals who are willing to upskill themselves and advance their careers in the financial services industry or to apply the skills in their current role. There is also opportunity to further your studies in the FinTech industry by enrolling in our Master of Science (MSc.) in FinTech programme.

Fees

The fee for the Diploma in FinTech is €1,500. This is inclusive of tuition, registration, exam fees and DBS library membership. This fee must be paid in full before the course begins.

  • Online Notes System (DBS Moodle)- is an eLearning system designed to provide you with a range of course material which will enhance and support your learning experience within DBS. 

  • DBS Library Aungier Street- the Library provides a programme of classes in the areas of Library resources, essay writing skills, avoiding plagiarism and referencing to assist you in your studies.  

  • DBS Careers and Appointment Service- which provides a range of services for Diploma students such as career advice and workshops in CV writing and interview skills. 

  • Subsidised Parking- DBS provides subsidised parking arrangements for students, which provides easy access to all main public transport routes in and out of the city centre. 

  • Subsidised Student Canteen- Diploma students can avail of the Student Canteen which is open in the evenings and offers a wide variety of choices on its menu.
