Overview

This one year programme has been designed with an emphasis on the practical application of Accounting and Finance knowledge to the commercial work place. It is intended for participants wishing to gain a solid foundation in the major components of the Accounting and Finance discipline and to allow them develop their financial literacy skills.

Aims and Objectives

The Diploma in Accounting and Finance is a learning and professional development programme, providing an understanding of accountancy, finance and business. This helps the candidate build technical knowledge, professional skills and practical experience needed to progress towards studying for a professional accounting qualification, studying a professional banking or finance qualification, or just as a means to develop their knowledge of accounting and finance.

The objectives of the Diploma in Accounting and Finance qualification are to:

Equip learners with the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding in on the practical application of Accounting and Finance knowledge to the commercial workplace.
Provide knowledge, skills and understanding for a range of careers in the accounting and finance disciplines.
Provide opportunities for progression in their career, employability or to higher education qualifications.
To provide learners with the opportunity to gain a solid foundation in the major components of the Accounting and Finance discipline and to allow them to develop their financial literacy skills.
To provide learners with an opportunity to achieve a recognised qualification.
To provide maximum flexibility to those wishing to pursue a career in accounting and finance.

Assessment

To meet the requirements of the Diploma in Accounting & Finance, a student will be required to complete end of term examinations (100%), which will be held twice yearly in January and May.

Diploma Structure

Our Finance and accounting Diploma is held over two evenings per a week over one year duration. The lecturing team consists of staff that combine both academic qualifications with substantial practical experience. A wide range of teaching techniques including lectures, seminars and case studies will form part of the course. The programme also encourages discussion and contributions from students on all aspects of accounting and finance.

Progression to DBS Programmes

For students interested in further study, the Diploma in Accounting & Finance will entitle students to exemptions at Level 1 of some of the Evening Business, Marketing and Accounting & Finance (Hons) Degree programmes at DBS. View our Evening Degrees.

Student Profile

Participants on the programme have had no prior education in the subject areas of accounting and/or finance. Some students have completed the programme as a foundation programme with a view to progressing to degree or postgraduate/ professional accountancy level. It is also beneficial to those who are not employed directly in an accounting related role but who are responsible for financial transactions in an organisation.

Progression to DBS Programmes

For students interested in further study, the Diploma in Accounting & Finance will entitle students to exemptions at Level 1 of some of the Evening Business Degree programmes at DBS.

Fees

The fee for our Diploma in Accounting and Finance is €2,000. This is inclusive of tuition, registration, exam fees and DBS library membership. This fee must be paid in full before the course begins.

• Online Notes System (DBS Moodle)- is an eLearning system designed to provide you with a range of course material which will enhance and support your learning experience within DBS.
• DBS Library Aungier Street- the Library provides a programme of classes in the areas of Library resources, essay writing skills, avoiding plagiarism and referencing to assist you in your studies.
• DBS Careers and Appointment Service- which provides a range of services for Diploma students such as career advice and workshops in CV writing and interview skills.
• Subsidised Parking- DBS provides subsidised parking arrangements for students, which provides easy access to all main public transport routes in and out of the city centre.
• Subsidised Student Canteen- Diploma students can avail of the Student Canteen which is open in the evenings and offers a wide variety of choices on its menu.

This programme is a KPA Level 4 Diploma in Accountancy and Finance (RQF). This is aligned to Level 6 on the Irish National Framework of Qualifications.
