Law School attracts some of the most intelligent, ambitious and successful members of our society year in, year out. Notable names to have studied law include former US President, Barack Obama and his wife and first lady, Michelle Obama, American actress and film producer, Sigourney Weaver, the first female president of Ireland, Mary Robinson, and Italian singer/songwriter, Andrea Bocelli. A qualification in law can set you up for a long and prosperous career in a field where you can really make a difference. If you are interested in working in law, here’s what you need to know.

The Various Branches of Law

There are many branches of law to choose from such as Criminal Law, Contract Law, Family Law, Employment Law and Law of Tort. At DBS, the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) will cover all of these topics and more, preparing graduates who wish to qualify as solicitors, to sit the Law Society of Ireland FE1 examinations, which are a prerequisite to training as a solicitor. The programme also enables graduates to sit the Honorable Society of King's Inn's entrance examinations, the passing of which are a prerequisite for taking the Barrister-at-Law degree.

Where You Study Law Matters

Because laws vary from country to country, it is vital that you study in the place that you intend to live and work for the rest of your life. Whilst some legal systems are similar, you may have to take additional exams to qualify you to work in another country, which is something to bear in mind if you do not intend to stay in the same place for long.

Life as a Law Student

Be prepared for A LOT of reading if you want to study law, there is endless material out there and knowing cases and details inside out is the key to your success in this field. This is not a programme where you can cram before your exams and expect to succeed, hard work is a necessity so be prepared for long days and evenings of study.

Career Prospects for Graduates

The Bachelor of Laws degree provides a firm foundation for students wishing to train as solicitors or barristers. Additionally a law degree is one of the most respected undergraduate qualifications. It opens up a range of career opportunities apart from the practice of the law. Law graduates are employed in a wide variety of areas including commercial industry, social sciences, politics, the media and the public service. A legal education therefore opens more doors than just the practice of law.
