From China to DBS; International Student Story

44

Yuxi Miao travelled from her home in China to complete the final year BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance at DBS. She told us how she found the transition.

Why did you decide to study at DBS?

My university in China has been running a project to work with DBS sending students to Ireland for further study. This offered me a choice. It was not the first time I travelled to Europe but it was the very first time I got a chance to study abroad. To be honest, I barely knew anything about this beautiful country before I came here but I did do some research. I found out that studying in Ireland would be a good way for me to experience a new culture and of course in my parents’ perspective, Ireland is very safe and DBS is a very professional college for students who study finance and business, therefore I made my decision to study in DBS.

How did you find the transition of living in a new country?

It was not that hard for me to adapt to a new life here because the staff in DBS helped me a lot. I did take some time to figure out certain things such as how to buy a leap card or how to get GNIB but I really enjoyed this challenge. My parents are now living in Berlin and I can’t speak German, so when I was there I found out the importance of effective communication. It was good to communicate with others in English! My experience has taught me that whenever you come across something you don’t understand, ask someone who knows. It is a good and efficient way to solve problems and make new friends.

What has your experience been like so far, both with living in Ireland and studying at DBS?

I feel great living and studying in Ireland. There are many international students from different backgrounds studying in DBS and studying with them is a great experience.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of moving away from his or her native home to study in Ireland?

  1. Do some reading to learn about the culture and history of Ireland so you can integrate into a foreign life quickly.

  2. Never be afraid of making mistakes in speaking English.

  3. Attend more social activities so you can make friends.

  4. You are here to study so if you come cross some difficulties when learning turn to your lecturers and classmates for help.

Are you happy with your decision to come here to study?

Of course, this was a wise decision which benefits me a lot, and the days of studying in Dublin will be a wonderful memory.
