The Top Skills Needed to Work in Marketing, Advertising, Sales & PR

Making the move into a new industry can be tough. With little experience or knowledge about a particular field it can be difficult to convince employers that you are the right person for a job or that you know enough to hit the ground running. This process can be made easier by having some form of qualification in the area which sets you apart from other job applicants and shows that you have a desire to learn more and broaden your skillset.

DBS offer a year long Diploma programme in Marketing, Advertising, Sales & PR which provides students with a solid foundation of knowledge in all of these areas, and prepares them for the working world. This course is ideal if you are not sure which area you would like to specialise in just yet, or if you would like to have a broad understanding of each one. Whilst these industries differ in many ways, and eventually you will choose a specific path to go down, there are a number of overlapping skills required to work in any of them. These are the top skills that would benefit you if job hunting in these fields.

Communication

These are all communication industries, and therefore communications skills are the number one asset a person can have. From talking to clients, liaising with colleagues, attending meetings, making presentations and pitches, conveying ideas and messages through various channels, and getting to grips with digital media, communication is key.

Creativity

There is an abundance of creativity needed if you wish to work in marketing, advertising or PR. Much of your time will be spent brainstorming ideas for up and coming campaigns and thinking of ways to drive interest around your product or service. Even when working in sales, you will need to think of creative ways to sell a product and hit targets.

Innovation

Innovation is an important skill to have as you will need to come up with fresh ideas constantly, and evolve current processes in order to improve efficiency and achieve better results. Keeping up with the latest trends in these industries will help you to get ahead.

Technology

Not everyone needs to know the ins and outs of the technology behind these industries, but in this digital driven society it is important to have an awareness of the technologies needed to effectively reach customers and the best platforms to use for sales and marketing.

Here are what some of our students had to say about the Diploma in Marketing, Advertising, Sales & PR at DBS.

“The Diploma in Marketing, Advertising, Sales and PR was exactly what I was looking for. It combined business with communications and creativity. Returning to college was daunting at first, but I settled into the routine quickly. The lecturers were so approachable and supportive that the experience really built up my self-confidence.” - Paula O’Malley

“The Diploma in Marketing, Advertising, Sales and PR has benefited both my professional career and personal life. I found the variation of each of the modules most enjoyable and how they are all interlinked with each other. Also, I thoroughly enjoyed the interactions with the rest of my class, having contact to such astounding diversity is a wonderful experience.” - Niamh McGeown

“On completion of the course, I had the confidence to prepare a marketing and advertising campaign and to present a sales pitch in a business environment.  More importantly, I learned how to market myself and optimise my online presence.  I became my own first marketing client.” - Peggy Kennedy
