David Gordon recently completing a Springboard+ Diploma in Big Data for Business. He told us some of his favourite aspects of the course and how he found studying at DBS.
Why did you choose the course?
I have been keenly interested in the topic of Big Data/Data Analytics in recent years and was seeking a course that would give me a solid grounding in the core areas of Big Data i.e. Maths and Stats, Information Systems and coding. The Diploma in Big Data for Business at DBS addressed my needs perfectly by providing a solid grounding in all of the key areas without expecting any previous experience in these areas.
How did you enjoy the course?
Overall I have been very happy with the course and have learned a lot from it. In particular, I have enjoyed the modules in Maths and Stats, Information Systems and Data Management the most. These modules were well-taught and provided lots of practical, hands-on knowledge.
How has the course benefited you personally?
I've met lots of great people at DBS and made lots of new friends! My class has bonded well and we've had some great social events over the course of the year. I've also had the opportunity to talk to people in DBS about possible future career options.
How has the course benefited you professionally?
I've developed new knowledge in areas that are intrinsic to Data Analytics i.e. coding in SQL Server and R. I've also developed a much better understanding of the challenges faced within the Data Analytics industry. I've become much more confident about pursuing a career in this field. I will be much more confident now when interviewing for any Data Analyst roles. I've also made lots of new professional connections and connected to several classmates and DBS staff members on LinkedIn. This can only help me in the future.
Do you think the course helped you get your current role?
I think the real value of the course will come after I am finished and seeking roles within Data Analytics. My current priority is to complete the course and submit all of my assignments on time. Because it's the summer time I am not actively seeking a new job, but once September arrives I will proactively seek new employment within Data Analytics.
Where are you currently working?
At a software company called N3 in Dublin. N3 is partnered with Microsoft so I work with Microsoft products and serve Microsoft customers.
What did you feel was the best thing about studying in DBS?
The location is terrific, right in the middle of Dublin city centre! The accessibility of DBS is a very strong selling point, whether you are walking, cycling or driving. Also, I found the DBS library and careers services to be of huge value and the staff at DBS were very helpful to me whenever I sought help.
