Interview: Meet the 2015/16 DBS Student Council

The DBS Student Council is a group of nine students from across all years and courses.

Student Council President, Kim Jennings, is a Psychology student and Vice President, Lexi Gumpo is studying Accounting and Finance. Both are now in third year.

Lexi explains that she joined the Student Council to try and make the college experience a better one for students, and help with their welfare. As well as that she was keen on promoting the social aspects of the college, meeting new people from across different courses and enhancing her own college experience.

This year’s Student Council President, Kim Jennings, also enjoys the aspect of making friends from other courses she otherwise wouldn’t meet. “Meeting people and helping people,” are the most rewarding things, as well as sorting out any issues that have been causing stress, according to Kim.

The Student Council organise the Christmas and formal balls, investigate general queries that students have, and help students in getting any information they need about the college.  A recent example of the good work that the Council do involved requesting and getting the library closing times changed following student requests. This year, the Christmas ball will be a formal ball to include international students, who would otherwise miss out on the formal ball, which is traditionally held at the end of the college year.

Kim and Lexi say that the staff in DBS make their job easier as anyone they need to contact is generally quick to respond and happy to help.

The Council represents student views from across the college. Lexi explains that “everyone can join. We have some second years and first years can join too.” She says that first years might find it harder or maybe a bit daunting, but everyone helps each other out.
