The monetary rewards potentially on offer makes a career in the financial services sector a very appealing prospect to those who feel they have the interest in, and aptitude for, this ever growing area of business. Financial Services is the area of business most closely associated with money, value and property. Every organisation or individual utilises financial services and benefits from them and the individuals who advise and manage those activities are in line for top financial rewards. The BA (Hons) Financial Services is a course designed for the potential financial managers of tomorrow. It focuses upon the most dynamic aspects of financial services. Students learn about the core mechanisms and operations of financial markets and develop proficiency in the analytical techniques required for a wide variety of careers in financial services.

 

Year 1

Six mandatory subjects provide foundation knowledge in core business areas and disciplines.

Year 2

Student knowledge in the key business disciplines is further developed and they are introduced to specialist financial areas such as fund accounting and the regulatory practices of financial institutions.

Year 3

At the final year, business knowledge is developed to the strategic level and specialist financial knowledge is further augmented in areas such as treasury and risk management and investment research and analysis.

Structure and Content

Students on this course will gain a sound and broad based knowledge of the financial services sector, with subjects studied reflecting the activities of major participants in the sector and providing insight into products, financial markets, management practices and performance. As the course progresses, students learn to apply the various methods and techniques they have studied. They also learn to develop pragmatic solutions to real problems and how to effectively communicate information, ideas, complex problems and solutions to a range of specialist and non-specialist audiences.

 

Transfer Students

Students holding a relevant certificate, ordinary degree or other relevant qualifications may qualify for entry to the second or third year of the degree programme.

 

Career Opportunities

A Financial Services related degree is targeting employment in the financial services sector. It is an ideal degree for students who wish to pursue careers in such areas as banking, insurance, stockbroking and financial consulting. Persons employed in the financial services sector engage in a variety of finance related activities such as giving financial advice, managing investment portfolios for individuals and companies, and approving loans. This degree will equip students for many different careers in the rapidly developing financial services industry, enabling them to compete for employment in high profile areas such as funds management, stock market analysis and corporate lending.

 

Teaching & Assessment

The BA (Hons) Business (Financial Services) is taught mainly through lectures and tutorials, with students taking responsibility for a significant amount of study outside scheduled class contact times. Assessed work will consist of traditional end-of-year examinations plus a significant element of continuous assessment based on coursework. Such coursework may involve research-based reports, case studies, essays, or practical assignments.
