Programme Aims & Objectives The two year LL.B (Hons) in Irish Law (Graduate Entry) programme aims to enable non law graduates who have decided upon law as a career path to complete a law degree in 2 years and thus facilitate greater access to a legal career from amongst a group of students who have already proved themselves at degree level. On successful completion of the programme graduates may aspire to take the FE1’s or the King’s Inns Entrance Examination.
The programme also aims to equip students for a range of careers by using teaching and learning techniques that develop their intellectual and transferable skills. These skills are designed to strengthen their employability in careers that may be unrelated to the professional practice of law. On completion of the programme students will have: - A sound educational underpinning which will enable them to acquire a solid grounding in legal principles, the fundamental features of the Irish legal system
- A fundamental understanding of the core Irish legal subjects to facilitate progression to the professional stage of training in Ireland with the Law Society of Ireland or the King’s Inns
- Developed a range of transferable skills including the powers of inquiry, critical analysis and logical thinking, initiative, independent learning and commitment to scholarship
- Developed a range of graduate skills in preparation for employment in a wide variety of fields and a fundamental understanding of society and of the role of law within society.
Programme Structure The law degree programme is delivered through lectures, tutorials and workshops with students taking responsibility for a significant amount of study outside scheduled class contact hours. Assessment will consist of traditional end of year examinations, timed essays plus a significant element of continuous assessment. Coursework will involve research based reports, case studies, essays and practical assignments. Assessment Most subjects are assessed by way of an assignment worth 25% of the overall marks each year and a sessional examination worth 75% of the overall marks for the subject. Entry Requirements To be considered for admission, applicants must hold: - A primary honours degree award of at least pass level in a non-cognate discipline from a recognised Irish third level institution, or equivalent qualification
- A primary honours degree award from outside Ireland must be recognised as equivalent by the National Qualification Authority of Ireland (NQAI)
- An IELTS score of a minimum 6.0 or equivalent, where full-time study has been conducted in a language other than English, or applicants whose first language is not English.
