The Bachelor of Business in Retail offers you an exciting and challenging route to obtaining an internationally recognised degree. Lidl will fully sponsor the programme so there is no cost to you. This degree programme is designed to give a clearly structured business education that runs for just over two years and provides a solid foundation for success in a retail career.  Students are provided with a solid understanding of general business theory and practice and it is underpinned by the work-based training in a Lidl store, allowing trainees to put into practice what they have learned in college.

Course Content

The Bachelor of Business in Retail Management Programme is designed to give a clearly structured business education that provides a solid foundation for success in a retail career. The course, which runs for almost 3 years, provides a strong grounding in fundamental retail business concepts, ideas, practices and methodologies. It features a rich learning environment that involves trainees in comprehensive analysis of business organisations, functions, processes and management techniques with particular emphasis on the retail sector. This programme provides trainees with a solid understanding of retail business theory and practice. The course is underpinned by a comprehensive work-based training programme, which allows trainees to put into practice what they have learned in college. It also provides the knowledge and skills that will enable an effective contribution to the resolution of business problems and will prepare trainees for the challenges posed by the dynamic nature of the modern retail environment.

The DBS Employability Pillar, which runs throughout the duration of the degree, will demonstrate an awareness of transferable skills and their applicability in ‘real-life’ situations, projects undertaken and how they are applied in different circumstances so that students can take ownership of your own career management. Students will be able to develop realistic career plans and initiate and sustain professional networks and relationships to encourage opportunities for employment and internships. Students will present themselves and their skills, attributes, experiences and qualifications, through effective job applications, CVs, interviews and voluntary activities. This will enable students to develop the necessary skills to compete effectively for a broad range of employment, postgraduate study options and innovative opportunities available to them and further develop lifelong learning and continuous professional development.

Teaching and Assessment

The academic side of the Bachelor of Business in Retail Management is taught mainly through lectures and tutorials, with trainees taking responsibility for a significant amount of study outside scheduled class contact times. Continuous assessment will vary in style depending upon the nature of the subject material. A variety of assessment methods are combined to ensure a wide range of student abilities are assessed over the duration of the programme. These methods will include individual assignments, case study analyses, debates, role play, group projects, presentations, interactive simulation games, portfolio of evidence of development of key skills, exams and a retail project.


The programme consists of alternating blocks of 16 weeks over two calendar years. Throughout these two years, trainees will complete 3 store-based blocks and 3 college-based blocks. While in college, students will work towards gaining a Level 7 QQI awarded Bachelor of Business in Retail Management, studying modules such as Leadership Development, Retail Supply Chain Management and Customer Relationship Management. During their work based learning in store, students will begin their training as a Store Assistant, progress to Supervisor/Anchor level in block 2, before reaching the high performing Deputy Store Manager level by the end of the programme. 


The programme is fully sponsored by Lidl, with college fees paid for! Throughout the duration of the programme, trainees will receive an annual salary, whether they are in DBS or store.

Year 2 salary - €22,000

Career Opportunities

On successful completion of this programme, graduates will be equipped with a firm business education that provides a solid foundation for a successful career in retail. Graduates will also have an excellent opportunity to potentially be offered a permanent Deputy Store Manager contract by Lidl immediately.


Fees for the Bachelor of Business in Retail Management are fully sponsored by Lidl throughout the entire t​wo year programme. In addition to full fee sponsorship, participating students are paid a salary and qualify for holiday and healthcare benefits. Please see for further details.

All QQI accredited programmes of education and training of 3 months or longer duration offered by Dublin Business School (DBS) are covered by arrangements under section 65 (4) (b) of the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 whereby in the event that DBS ceases to provide the programme, for any reason, after learners have started on that programme, Kaplan Inc., as guarantor, will refund the moneys most recently paid by or for the learner.   More details are included in the terms and conditions of learner admission to DBS ( and on programme handbooks provided at induction.
