Our outgoing Sports Scholarship students had a hugely successful year, with both the Basketball Club and Soccer Club winning trophies, and all of the students involved securing an award at this year’s Annual Formal Ball and Awards Ceremony. This was also our largest intake on the Sports Scholarship programme to date, with seven sports stars enrolled across our academic disciplines from Psychology to MBA. It was also the first year DBS had a female Sports Scholarship student.

Here’s what some of our 2017/18 Sports Scholarship students had to say about the programme…

Aaron Byrne:

“The Sports Scholarship Programme gave me the opportunity to play the sport I love while also getting a superb degree in my preferred elective. It was an easy and successful decision which only made college life more enjoyable.”

Mylnyue Reeves:

“I decided to leave my family and everything I’ve ever known to travel to Dublin to pursue a Master’s of science in Management Practice. Dublin Business School offered me a chance to play basketball for another year, and the experience of embracing a different culture. I had never travelled out of America for longer than two weeks before deciding to come to Dublin for an entire year. While at DBS, I was exposed to a great deal of learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. From thought provoking discussions on corporate strategy to meeting with representatives from Enterprise Ireland on the future of the fintech industry. On the court, it was an honour to compete with my teammates from all over the world.  Some of my teammates were from Germany, France, Nigeria, India, and even Kentucky to name a few of the many different cultures that are represented at the DBS. Within a short period of time the team came together to have the most successful season in the club’s history, with a League championship and a semi-final appearance in the Intervarsity’s tournament.

My time at DBS developed my leadership ability, time management, and deepened my knowledge of business. The Sports Scholarship Programme has had a huge impact on my life and I'm excited to see where all my new found knowledge and experiences will lead me in the future.”

Holli Dunne:

"To achieve a Sports Scholarship and to represent my college in both a sporting and academic capacity has been a fantastic honour. Having a scholarship has allowed me to network with fellow scholarship students and it has broadened my exposure across multiple sports and disciplines. It has also given me an opportunity to become more involved in college activities and work with numerous staff members.

Outside of representing DBS, I play at the highest level in my sport and having a scholarship allowed me to be identified as an elite player for my college, which is important for me and for promoting our college. Financially it has been a significant help to me, providing assistance with my course and training, and ensuring that I can train at the highest level. Finally, it has given me the opportunity to be an ambassador for DBS, promoting our college’s willingness to support young athletics who aspire to achieve their dreams.

It has been a fantastic personal achievement, one that I am very proud and grateful for."

Erik Eichinger:

“Accepting the DBS Sports Scholarship has been one of the best experiences of my life. The support staff led by the student experience team has made the transition to living in a new country a breeze and have been helpful every step of the way. I have also enjoyed meeting new people from all over the world and having success on and off the court with the basketball club. I would give my utmost recommendation to anyone considering applying as numerous benefits have come up for me with new opportunities I can not wait to take advantage of.”

Dylan Mc Mahon

"I chose the Sports Scholarship at DBS as it allowed me to play football at a high competitive level as well as study within the college. It provides an excellent platform for both academic and sporting achievements. It is also a great programme to be a part of as you meet new people and make new experiences.

The football aspect was tremendous to be involved in as the success was emulated yet again this year when we defended the Bob Eustace Cup. A fantastic achievement for the team and the college. It really makes a positive difference to my college life also."
