Congratulations to all DBS CIMA and ACCA prizewinners whose achievements in the recent professional accountancy exams were celebrated this week at a ceremony in the Radisson Blu, Dublin. Ten of the 53 prizes were placed in the top ten positions worldwide for their respective exams. Pictured above is Fearghal O'Sullivan who achieved the first in the world prize for the ACCA awarded Diploma in Financial Management.

The key theme of this student event was the entrepreneurial student and how to be your own catalyst for start up success. The event focused on how to succeed by not just having great ideas but also having the right attitude and the know-how.

Official Opening of New DBS Premises by An Tánaiste, Mary Coughlan

 Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills, Mary Coughlan, T.D., officially opened  the new DBS premises, Castle House on South Great Georges St, Dublin 2 on Tuesday the 16th of November. The investment in this new additional facility for DBS students is worth in excess of 8.5 million euros and signals a new and exciting chapter in the College’s development.

DBS Student wins Marketing Network's Marketing Student of the Year 2011

DBS Marketing Network Marketing Student of the Year 

Dublin Business School is proud to announce that Patrick Scott, a student on the Higher Certificate in Marketing has been awarded Marketing Network Marketing Student of the Year for 2011.  In addition to the prestige of such a title (the competition was open to all final year undergraduate and postgraduate students in Ireland) Patrick has also secured a 3-month paid work experience at Marketing Network.

Thursday 28th July 2011 saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between MARA and Dublin Business School in the new DBS Castle House premises on South Great Georges Street.  The MoU relates to an academic collaboration project concerning the development of an accountancy programme which will incorporate degree and professional accountancy pathways.

 ICT Skills Programme at DBS
DBS recently participated in Career Reboot, an event hosted by Microsoft Ireland in their Sandyford offices and run in conjunction with their partner companies and third level institutions.  Part of the joint government ‘ICT Skills Programme’ initiative, Career Reboot gave attendees the opportunity to meet 13 prospective employers including Ergo, Bearing Point, Accenture, PHF, Dell as well as get more information on the fully funded Higher Diploma conversion courses available.

DBS and the Kuwaiti Cultural Office recently signed and Memorandum of Understanding to formalise the long standing cooperation between the respective organisations. DBS will continue to provide academic pathways for Kuwaiti Ministry of Higher Education scholarship recipients  students across the disciplines of business, arts and law. ‘Knowing Google’ - DBS School of Arts Public Research Seminar Series
‘Knowing Google’ was the title of the most recent public research seminar from DBS School of Arts which was held in the DBS Castle House building on South Great George's Street on Friday 8th April. The seminar was delivered by Dr Kylie Jarrett.

As the dominant actor in the search industry, Google provides us with the information through which we organise our lives. However it also provides us with models for experiencing that information; for coming to know. By exploring the particular articulation of Google within the field of search and how, as both adherent and generator of the values of this field, Google has articulated a particular model of relevance that has come to define 'good search'.

DBS First Ireland Student Entrepreneur of the Year 2011

Congratulations to DBS Accounting and finance student Oliver Bausor Day who has won the First Ireland/Dublin Business School (DBS) Student Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2011 with his idea for a smartphone app.  The 21-year-old’s business project – which the judges described as innovative - is being kept under wraps until it is ready to go live.

Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) Annual Conference
Psychology staff and graduates of DBS attended and delivered poster and oral presentations at the 40th Annual Conference of the Psychological Society of Ireland in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, Thursday to Sunday 14th November 2010. This year’s student poster award was awarded to DBS graduates Nicklas Larsson and Caroline Connor for their paper entitled “The majority and minority of a stigmatized group: A study of people living with HIV in Ireland.”

DBS Crowned All-Ireland Colleges Champions

Congratulations to the DBS Badminton Team who narrowly defeated I.T. Carlow in the semi-finals of the CUSAI league on Friday 25th March and went on to defeat I.T. Cork in the final to be crowned Irish College Badminton Champions! The team have worked very hard this year and their achievement marks the first time any independent college has won the cup.

Graduates were conferred in programmes awarded by the Higher Education Training & Awards Council (HETAC), Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), University of Wales and the Institute of Commercial Management (ICM).

DBS was delighted to receive a very successful outcome from the HETAC Institutional Review process which was completed in the College recently. The HETAC Panel expressed full confidence in the College’s quality assurance procedures and processes. There were no conditions arising from the Panel’s visit. The Panel did make a number of recommendations, high level observations and commendations. One particular commendation made by the Panel related to the commitment, knowledge and expertise of DBS staff.

DBS Psychology Students Project Abstracts Published

 DBS Psychology Students
 Students from the final year part-time and full-time BA (Hons) Psychology classes were asked to come forward and submit an abstract for the Annual Congress of Psychology Students in Ireland held annually each year. This represents the first step on the professional ladder within the field of psychology. DBS was delighted that several students (mentioned below) submitted abstracts in this, it’s 32nd year. The conference itself is all-Ireland and represents each of the third level institutions in Ireland.

DBS Event Management Students Raise over €17,000 for Charity

DBS Fashion Show Event Management Students

Groups of students from the second year full-time and part-time  BA (Hons) Marketing with Event Management classes have collectively raised over €17,000 this year for charities including the Irish Cancer Society, Make a Wish Foundation, Temple Street Hospital, Barnardos, the Marie Keating Foundation, Dublin Simon Community, the Diabetes Federation of Ireland and the Martin Whitehead Hospice.

'Law & Practice' Public Lecture Series

DBS School of Law ran its second successful series of public lectures from January to March 2011. The series entitled ‘Law & Practice’ featured lectures by leading academics and professionals including Mark de Blacam, Senior Counsel and Professor David McLean. Their respective lecture topics were entitled ‘Judicial Review & Human Rights’ and ‘Contemporary Legal Issues in Modern Aviation Travel’. Another lecture ‘The Work of the Injuries Board’ was delivered by Dorothea Dowling, Chair of the Injuries Board (formerly the Personal Injuries Assessment Board PIAB).

Leinster Crowned Heineken Cup Champions 2011

Congratulations to DBS Student and Captain Leo Cullen who led the Leinster squad to conjure the greatest comeback in Heineken Cup final history and collect their second European title. A brilliant second-half display from Leinster stunned Northampton as the Irish side won 33-22 to take their second Heineken Cup in three years at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday 21st May.

Marketing Students Challenge

 DBS Marketing Students Challenge
 DBS Marketing students participated in a project which saw groups compete with each other to address and provide innovative marketing solutions to marketing challenges faced by real companies. The companies involved in turn gave feedback on the value of the students’ ideas to their businesses. Some of the recommendations outlined in the projects have since been put forward for application to their marketing strategies going forward including the development of a recycling iPhone ‘app’ for Repak who fund packaging recycling. A number of the students involved also secured internships as a result of their hard work and ideas.

The Trendence Graduate Barometer 2010
The Trendence Graduate Barometer is an independent survey conducted annually by trendence, a part of the GTI Group. The survey looks at graduates' preferences and priorities when selecting a first employer after graduation and examines their strategies when looking for information about potential employers. The graduates are asked to select the career sectors they are interested in entering and the organisations they consider to be attractive first employers, as well as answering a range of questions on their approach and attitudes to the job search, communication and information-gathering habits, academic achievements, experience and skills.

The survey was conducted in 24 higher education institutions across Ireland, with 5,608 students responding. In the most recent survey, the DBS Careers and Appointment Service has scored above the national average for careers services in 12 out of 15 categories which illustrates the dedication and commitment of the College staff to student and graduate employability. The Graduate Barometer continues to provide an authoritative and illuminating picture of Irish students’ and graduates’ preferences and perceptions with regard to career issues.

'Law & Practice' Public Lecture Series

Dublin Business School ran a series of  public lectures from January  to March 2010. The series was entitled ‘Law & Practice’  and featured lectures on topics including 'Future of EU – China Trade: A Regulatory Perspective', 'New Solicitors Training Contracts & Work Based Learning', 'The Purpose of Judicial Review and the Grounds on which it may be Granted' and Recent Developments in Insolvency Law'. The lectures were delivered by  high profile professionals and specialist lecturers in their respective  fields including Professor James Kirkbride from Liverpool John Moores University and Giles Proctor, Head of Kaplan Law School.

 

  
DBS Film Students Get Creative
 DBS Film

The BA (Hons) Film Studies students held a successful end of year photography exhibition in Anseo on Camden Street entitled ‘Gravitational Forces Have Nothing on Me’ which showcased work completed as part of their assessment and also their own personal portfolios.  

These creative students also organised the first DBS Cult Film Festival which will now be an annual event in the College.

Congratulations to Padraig Harrington

In November 2006, Dublin Business School was delighted to confer one of it's former students, international golfer Padraig Harrington with an Honorary Fellowship in its inaugeral fellowship ceremony held in the RDS, Dublin. The former DBS student, has been one of Ireland's leading sportsmen over the past decade and at the ceremony he paid tribute to DBS. 'Thank you to Dublin Business School who showed great foresight in providing me with a scholorship opportunity to continue with my studies while still being an amateur player. It is great to see that the College's success has mirrored mine since then.'

BA (Hons) Marketing with Event Management Students 'Learn and Earn' for their Chosen Charity

The third year BA (Hons) Marketing with Event Management have raised over €10,000 for the Make-a-Wish® Foundation by organising and hosting 7 different events this year including a ‘Madhatter Comedy Night’, ‘Homegrown Dance Night’ and an Italian-themed night in Howl at the Moon which was attended by over 700 people. Each class was divided into 2-3 groups. An Event Company was formed for each group and roles were delegated as per industry, while lecturers interviewed for the positions of CEO, Financial Controller etc.

Tripod on Dublin's Harcourt Street was the venue for the 2009 DBS Fashion Show. Student models strutted their stuff in aid of the Irish Cancer Society, wearing clothes sponsored by top brands including G-Star, Berska, Fran & Jane, Lacoste and Hugo Boss. Brian Maher from Spin 103.8's Zoo Crew was Master of Ceremonies on the night and the Asolo Academy of Dance opened the New York-themed show with a blend of urban and hip-hop dance.
