‘Knowing Google’ - DBS School of Arts Public Research Seminar Series | | ‘Knowing Google’ was the title of the most recent public research seminar from DBS School of Arts which and was held in the DBS Castle House building on South Great George's Street on Friday 8th April. The seminar was delivered by Dr Kylie Jarrett. As the dominant actor in the search industry, Google provides us with the information through which we organise our lives. However it also provides us with models for experiencing that information; for coming to know. By exploring the particular articulation of Google within the field of search and how, as both adherent and generator of the values of this field, Google has articulated a particular model of relevance that has come to define 'good search', this paper will explore the nature of Google's epistemology and what this tells us about the specific way of knowing that defines the culture of search.
Dr Kylie Jarrett is a lecturer in Multimedia in the Centre for Media Studies at NUI Maynooth. Her research focuses on the critical analysis of commercial digital media as well as the political economy of multimedia. Her doctoral study examined the discourse of consumer empowerment in the field of e-commerce and she has since applied this study to websites like eBay and YouTube. | | | |
