Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP)

CILIP accredits undergraduate and postgraduate library and information courses in England, Wales and Scotland. Successful completion of an accredited course will help you get professional posts in the UK and elsewhere in the world. It will also enable you to register to Charter with CILIP
The programme is also designed to provide you with relevant human resource training, so that you are familiar with the latest theoretical and practical developments relating to the management and development of people in the workplace. Skills in research, team development and strategy coupled with an exceptional understanding of people in the workplace equip graduates to excel in the HR arena.


Aims of the Programme

Available to all graduates with a primary degree in any area of study, the MSc Information and Library Management at Dublin Business School is designed to give students a thorough overview of professional and academic developments in the information and library sector. The programme provides a recognised professional qualification to those wishing to establish careers in the rapidly expanding information and library sector in Ireland and abroad. The programme also provides those already working in the information or library sector with the opportunity to obtain a recognised professional qualification that will allow them to work at a professional grade. The MSc Information and Library Management at Dublin Business School fulfils a need in the market place for a high quality information and library management programme which is available on a full- time and part-time basis.

Entry Requirements

To be considered for admission, applicants must hold a minimum Second Class Honours Degree (2.2) in a non-cognate discipline from a recognised third level institution or equivalent qualification
  • An IELTS score of a minimum 6.0 or equivalent, where full-time study has been conducted in a language other than English or applicants whose first language is not English.
  • Prior work experience is helpful but not essential as a professional placement is provided as part of the programme.

Structure

Work Experience

As part of the MSc Information & Library Management at Dublin Business School and in order to meet CILIP professional requirements, a three week professional placement will take place between semesters one and two for full-time students who do not have prior library experience. Part-time students can complete their placement between year one and year two. Placements are organised through the DBS Employer Liaison Officer with the support of the Head Librarian who also manages the Careers and Appointments Service at DBS which is based in the Library.

Career Opportunities

Graduates can successfully take up professional posts in academic and public libraries. They also secure professional posts in more specialised libraries such as legal, medical, government and corporate libraries. Graduates also find employment outside of libraries in a wide range of jobs within the corporate sector as knowledge managers, information managers, records managers and computer, data and information systems professionals. According to U.S. News & World Report, careers in the library and information science ranks as one of the "Best Careers of 2008.”

Fee Structure at DBS

The course fees for the next academic year are €7,900 full-time or €4,950 per annum part-time for Masters programmes or €5,990 for both full-time and part-time (16 months) higher diploma programmes.  This covers the cost of tuition, registration and examinations. Please note also that there is tax relief for Irish income tax payers at the standard rate of 20% on all fees exceeding €1,000 and up to €7,000. Fees are typically payable in three installments. 50% of the annual fee is due upon acceptance of the programme and prior to course commencement in September with the balance payable in two installments at the end of November and the end of December.   • Proof of English (i.e. IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent) where full time study has been conducted in a language other than English or applicants whose first language is not English 
  • Academic/Business References - Ideally one Academic & one Business

  • A copy of your GNIB (Garda National Immigration Bureau) Card, Work permit (if applicable) & Passport 
  • The letter that was issued to you by the Department of Justice, Equality & Law Reform stating why you were provided with the above documentation
