Guide to Disabilities Supports Exam support Special arrangements can be made for examinations when students are registered with the Disabilities Support service and have provided medical documentation. Students will be informed of which supports they are entitled to avail of by the Disabilities Support Service following a needs assessment. These arrangements can include:
• Extra time
• Use of a laptop
• Use of a private room
• A reader
• A scribe
• Alternate format for exam papers • A spelling /grammar waiver In Class Support Lecture notes and PowerPoint slides can be made available to students in advance of classes. They can also be produced in alternative formats. Students’ photocopying accounts can be credited to fund copying classmates’ lecture notes. Where students have given consent, teaching staff will be informed in advance of any special needs of the students in their classes. Academic Support Extra help is available for students who feel they need support in developing third level academic skills such as essay planning, academic writing and research skills. Group support The library runs weekly classes on:
• Academic writing
• Referencing

One to one Support There is a 2 hour drop in academic support session each week in term time. Students can bring a piece of work in progress such as an essay plan or draft version of a piece of coursework to get feedback on their academic writing. There is no need to make an appointment. Assistive Technology Both the Undergraduate Library in Aungier Street and the Postgraduate Library in Dame Street have PCs offering assistive technology software. These include: Read Please: All purpose text-to-speech software that reads out loud any text you can see on screen. Freemind: A mind mapping tool useful for those with learning difficulties such as dyslexia as well as those who like to visualise their thoughts. Lunar Software Magnification Screen Reader: For library users with visual disabilities. Visual Magnifier: A screen magnification tool designed for the visually impaired and others who need to magnify part of the screen.
Many books in the library’s collection are also available as an eBook. Once downloaded the eBooks can be played as audio books, text can be enlarged and they can be used with screen readers such as JAWS and Read & Write Gold.
Many of the Journal articles that are accessed through the library website can also be downloaded as an HTML or PDF document and played as audio files. Counselling The DBS Counselling Service is run by referral to the The Elmwood Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy. Sessions can be booked for 1 hour and each student is entitled to three sessions free of charge. Students can organise to obtain a referral letter by contacting the Disabilities Office, disabilitiessupport@dbs.ie or 01 4177530. Both our Aungier Street and South Great George’s Street locations are fully accessible. Due to its age our building on Balfe Street currently presents some restrictions to students with disabilities. Until this is improved students with access needs are accommodated, where possible, in accessible areas.
