Postgraduate Library and Information Service

The DBS Library and Information Service provides an integrated library, computing and media facilities to support students and staff of the College and offers a range of facilities to postgraduate students. The library has its own website on the main college website and a page on the student intranet. These pages are regularly updated and provide information on our opening hours, access to the catalogue, links to databases, links to guides and details on staff contacts.

For postgraduate students, the three main services provided by the library and information service department are:

Main Library

The Main Library in Aungier Street is a newly refurbished and expanded resource. Over the past year the library has been significantly extended and now includes over 240 reading spaces, 4 study rooms, a media room, 28 computer terminals, photocopying and printing facilities, access to online resources and 6 day a week opening hours (increasing to 7 day service for the 2 months prior to the main examination period). The collection has also expanded considerably and the DBS holding now stands at 45,000 volumes with a journal collection of over 212 titles. New titles are added on a regular basis and students can sign up for subject specific alerts. The main library also has a sizeable video and DVD collection. Students are encouraged to make use of this resource. Students can borrow books, laptops, mini-discs, micro-cassette recorders and DVD from the main library.

Online resources are an essential element for the successful completion of course work and study by students. Registered library users have access to a number of premium remote access on-line resources including Emerald, InfoTrac, ProQuest, PsychArticles and more. Online tutorials on how to use the library catalogue are available on the student intranet and Library tours are organised at the start of each semester to acclimatise students to their new academic environment.

DBS Postgraduate Library

As well as accessing the Main Library, postgraduate students also have access to a purpose designed research library in our Dame Street facility. This new and exciting resource is dedicated to the needs of postgraduate students and provides a wide range of information resources, facilities and services to support and enhance the learning experience in Dublin Business School. The library has extensive opening hours. It is opened 6 day a week increasing to 7 days per week for the 2 months prior to the main examination period. The majority of library staff, have a postgraduate qualification or are studying for a postgraduate qualification and are aware of the research process and information requirements specific to the postgraduate student.

Acknowledging that the needs of postgraduate students differ from those at undergraduate level, DBS Dame Street facilities include:

  • A comprehensive postgraduate only library with wireless connectivity
  • Online access to digital library and information resources including premium academic databases. These databases include Emerald, Proquest, Infotrac ,Psyarticles, PEPWEB and Lexis Nexis Professional. Access to the online resources of Liverpool John Moore University is also facilitated via Athens. The latter facility is available for postgraduate students only.
  • Access to laptops configured with up-to-date software suitable for academic purposes. Software installed on the laptops includes SPSS14.0
  • Training and induction sessions for all resources and equipment.

Research forms a significant part of postgraduate study and as such both library and academic staff are available to help students navigate their way through the research process. Library staff can be approached with individual enquiries pertaining to research and sourcing reference material. Assistance is provided on areas such as information seeking skills, literature review techniques and general academic writing skills. Students are encouraged to meet with the research librarian to discuss their information needs early in the academic year. In addition to accessing books and journals at the main library, postgraduate students can also access workshops that are carried out at the main library on a variety of topic such as essay writing, avoiding plagiarism, online databases and referencing.

Computing and Information Services

All students at DBS have access to an extensive range of networked computer facilities, which are constantly upgraded to incorporate the latest computing technology.
