The BA (Hons) Business Management (Leisure and Recreation Management) degree programme prepares students to design, manage and deliver tourism, leisure and recreation services to a variety of people in diverse settings. The leisure and recreation industry is one of the largest and fastest growing global industries and requires high levels of professionalism. This industry continues to rapidly develop and plays a major role in the economic life in Ireland and internationally. Government initiatives for healthy lifestyles, national and international sports achievements, a booming tourism industry and individual interest have all contributed to the industry’s development.

Aims & Objectives

The aim is to provide a balanced and flexible business education complemented by a specialised focus on the leading aspects of leisure and recreation management. Having completed this programme, students will have considerable insight into the effective management of their organisations. They will also have the business knowledge and personal skills to establish them in business careers, particularly those with a leisure and recreation orientation.

The overall programme objectives are:

  • To provide students with knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of the leisure and recreation industry
  • To develop and nurture in students a methodical approach to analysis, problem solving and decision making
  • To provide opportunities for personal development
  • To develop students’ learning skills to meet the demands of postgraduate study.

Programme Structure

Level 1 is a foundation level, which is common to many of the College’s undergraduate degree programmes. The foundation level provides knowledge in the primary business disciplines, as well as developing the broad cognitive skills of students.

At Level 2 students knowledge in the key business disciplines is further developed and they are introduced to principles of tourism, leisure and recreation that will underpin subsequent studies. This provides the student with a superb grounding in key general business practices as well as gaining specific, valuable skills in the recreation and leisure area.

At Level 3 students study Business Strategy alongside a range of specialist leisure and recreation modules including Issues in Leisure and Recreation Management and Recreation Operations Management. A project affords the opportunity for students to apply specialist knowledge to practical work situations.

Assessment

Student assessment will be based on a combination of continuous assessment and end of year examinations. Continuous assessment will include essay writing, case studies, presentations, literature reviews and projects, and students will be required to work individually as well as in groups. End of year examinations are typically held in late April/early May. Level 1 subjects may also include an in-class assessment usually held in December.

Career Opportunities

This expanding industry offers many career opportunities to graduates specialising in leisure and recreation management. This programme prepares students to assume managerial, supervisory and leadership responsibilities in various tourism, leisure and recreation management agencies. This programme is designed to equip graduates to be able to take up positions requiring specific leisure, tourism and recreation knowledge and skills such as:
