Master of Arts (MA) Human Resource Management
Aims of the Programme The ability to confidently manage the human resource of an organisation represents an essential skill-set particularly in the current turbulent economic environment. In order for an organisation to be flexible in diverse business environments and to change direction at speed, there must be buy-in by its people. HR management facilitates those organisational responses and ensures competitive advantage is gained through motivated, focused organisational members. The aim of the programme is to develop these sets of abilities with a particular focus on a thorough understanding of human resource management. The MA Human Resource Management at Dublin Business School offers you a unique opportunity to study advanced theory and practice relating to people management, and to develop an appreciation of the causes and significance of managing resourcing strategy.
Key Features of the ProgrammeSome of the key issues you will study as part of your MA Human Resource Management degree programme include: - How does an organisation best manage its people in a changing world?
- How do we ensure we have the best resource strategy?
- How do we keep our people's skills sets current and optimised?
- What are the most appropriate methods to increase and sustain performance?
- What are the current policies and practices employed in employment relations?
- What are the overall strategic implications of HRM?
With these in mind, the programme is designed to provide you with relevant human resource training, so that you are familiar with the latest theoretical and practical developments relating to the management and development of people in the workplace. Skills in research, team development and strategy coupled with an exceptional understanding of people in the workplace equip graduates to excel in the HR arena.
Who is the Course Aimed at? The programme has been designed for students who wish to work in the human resource function of an organisation and who have a keen interest in the management and influence of people. Prior experience in HR is not required to enter the programme. The programme is aimed at those who have studied any primary degree where HRM was not the pure focus of the programme. The course is aimed at students with a primary degree in any area who wish to concentrate on HR in their future careers. Students with primary degrees in psychology and law find the programme particularly attractive as they can combine this knowledge with the material they learn on the MA Human Resource Management. That said, students from diverse backgrounds such as science, IT and engineering, etc find the programme equally attractive. Programme StructureThe programme is structured in two sequential stages. Stage 1 is a wholly taught component, contributing 60 credits. Stage 2 is a supervised dissertation, contributing 30 credits. The dissertation provides you with the opportunity to critically review the literature in any part of the taught syllabus. Full-time For full-time students, the taught component consists of 8 modules: four modules in the first semester and four modules in the second semester. Successful completion of the taught component stage allows you to move on to the dissertation stage. Part-time For part-time students, delivery of the programme is structured over 4 taught semesters. During each semester, students will normally study two modules and are typically required to attend lectures on two evenings per week and occasional weekend workshops. A Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) may be awarded to students who achieve 30 credits, and a Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) to students who achieve 60 credits in the taught stage. Assessment Methods Continuous assessment is an integral part of many of our taught modules. The weightings attaching to coursework and other forms of continuous assessment vary from module to module to facilitate all learning styles. You will experience a variety of teaching and learning assessment methods including lectures, seminars, tutorials, case studies, group and individual projects, examinations and reports. Entry Requirements To be considered for admission, applicants must hold: - A primary honours degree award of at least pass level in a non-cognate discipline from a recognised third level institution or equivalent qualification
