What is the Certificate?

 

The Certificate in Cultural Studies is a one year programme that offers an attractive mix of academic and skills based education designed to thoroughly prepare students for further third-level study or for entry to the workplace. The programme combines introductory studies of eight academic subjects with the aim of promoting a broad understanding of their nature, methods and concerns in order to allow students to make informed decisions about what academic subjects and interests they wish pursue to higher levels. The programme also provides a course of personal development, with particular focus on key transferable skills of organisation and time management, effective written and verbal communication, public speaking, project management and IT skills.

 

 

Programme Aims and Objectives

 

The aims of the Certificate in Humanities in Cultural Studies are as follows:

  • To provide an introductory-level knowledge and understanding of a range of subjects available for study within the arts and social sciences.
  • To promote an understanding of how different academic disciplines or subjects engage and explore common issues and concerns.
  • To promote the practice of writing in a range of forms and styles.
  • To thoroughly introduce and guide students though the varying forms and conventions of academic writing.
  • To facilitate in students’ development of skills of independent research and learning.
  • To offer the opportunity for progression onto Level 8 programmes of education and training in subject areas related to the content of the programme.

Programme Structure

 

The programme is comprised of 3 course modules, each delivered in 2 classes each per week. The Humanities Today provides an academic grounding in the Arts subjects within our provision and consists of introductions to Literature and Drama, Film Studies, History, and Media and Cultural Studies. The Social Sciences and Journalism Today provides an academic grounding in the social science subject within our provision, and consists of introduction to Social Science, Psychology, Politics and Economics and journalism. The Certificate Learning Lab provides a course of academic and personal development.

 

 

 

Transfer Learners

 

Graduates of this course will gain entry to any one of the following DBS School of Arts honours degree programmes: Bachelor of Arts (Hons), BA (Hons) Film, Literature and Drama, BA (Hons) Media & Cultural Studies, BA (Hons) Psychology, BA (Hons) Social Science, BA (Hons) Journalism, and BA (Hons) Film Studies.  Graduates will also be qualified to apply for entry to similar programmes elsewhere. In this way, learners should be able to progress from enrolling on the Certificate to graduating with an Honours Degree award in four years.

 

 

 

Teaching and Assessment

 

The Certificate in Humanities in Cultural Studies is taught through a combination of lectures, inter-active tutorials, workshops and project based activities. Learner progress is assessed through a combination of end of year examinations and continuous assessment assignments including discursive essays, case studies, individual and group projects, in class tests and presentations.

 

 

 

Further Career and Study Options

The course will be of use and interest to those interested taking a first step towards an arts education or for those interested in pursuing a career in any area of work that requires good skills of written expression, oral presentation, and conceptual and critical analysis. The course has an excellent record of inspiring students to go on to further study, with a very high proportion of graduates progressing onto honours level degree programmes in a range of subjects. Our graduates can now be found working for the Garda Siochána, in the health services, in education and the teaching profession, in the film and theatre industries, in business and in a range of other employment contexts.
